About the Program

The Centre for International and Defence Policy at Queen’s University is pleased to announce a new executive-level certificate program featuring novel analytical tools to confront modern security challenges.

During this five-day course, participants will engage with top Canadian and international experts to study topics such as crisis management in various regional contexts, innovations in military technology, strategic communication, as well as targeted sessions for professionals working in crisis zones.

With the Kingston Conference on International Security included, participants will learn new analytical and practical skills, participate in simulated crisis situations, and enhance their regional expertise.

The ECIS offers:

• Cutting-edge analysis of ongoing international security crises 
• A toolkit for conflict prevention and crisis response  
• Crisis simulations and negotiation exercises 
• Targeted sessions to more effectively operate in and understand volatile regions 
• Personalized consultations with key experts in the field   

Course modules include data collection and application, an examination of new actors in international security, interpretation and bias in research, bridging communication gaps between partners in the field, and an overview of how culture and identity impact conflict. Group sessions will allow participants to apply their expertise and collaborate with other participants in four geographically-based groups: the Americas, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific. Participants will also receive the opportunity to reinforce what they have learned from internationally-recognized experts through real-world experience. The course’s focus on working and staying safe in the field allows for immersion in real-time crisis simulations. 

A unique feature of the Queen’s Executive Course in International Security (ECIS) is the opportunity to engage with members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).  Candidates for the ECIS will participate in a CAF pre-deployment training familiarization experience hosted by the Peace Support Training Centre (PSTC) at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Kingston where they will be exposed to explosive awareness, clearing and rendering safe foreign weapons, and crisis negotiation sessions.  Candidates will be exposed to and familiarized with these various skills and techniques through formal presentations and briefing.  Moreover, they will also participate in a dynamic and immersive practical exercise that will incorporate all elements of this familiarization.

Registration fees covers all sessions and simulations, conference fees for KCIS, transportation to events, lunches and breaks.
